About BrightPath

A mentor in every young person’s corner.

Since 2012, BrightPath has connected San Diego youth ages 8–18 with adults who show up — and stay.

Our mission & history

Built on relationships, one match at a time.

BrightPath began in 2012 when a small group of San Diego volunteers saw a simple truth: many young people were navigating big challenges without a single dependable adult outside their family. They started matching mentors and mentees one pair at a time.

More than a decade later, that work has grown into after-school academic support, college and career readiness, and summer programming — all anchored by the same idea we started with: a consistent, caring relationship changes a young person’s path.

Why mentoring

The case for a caring adult

Decades of research point the same direction: young people with a consistent mentor are more likely to stay engaged in school, build confidence, and imagine a fuller future. A mentor does not replace a family — they add one more voice that says, “I believe in you,” and keeps showing up to prove it.

Our model

Match. Meet weekly. Support.

1

Match

A coordinator pairs each mentee with a screened, trained mentor based on interests, goals, and availability.

2

Meet weekly

Pairs spend time together every week — building trust through consistency, not pressure.

3

Support the match

Regular check-ins, training refreshers, and resources keep each relationship healthy and growing.

What guides us

Our values

Consistency over intensity

Showing up reliably, week after week, matters more than any grand gesture. We build relationships that last.

Youth-centered

Every match starts with the young person — their interests, goals, and voice guide the relationship.

Safety first

Screening, training, and ongoing oversight protect the young people we serve. Always.

Community rooted

We are of San Diego — partnering with schools, families, and local employers across the region.

Equity-minded

We work to reach young people who have the fewest mentors and the most potential.

Outcomes honest

We measure what matters and report it plainly to the families and funders who trust us.
